Fearless at 25: Katelin’s Triple Negative Breast Cancer Journey

As we conclude our World Cancer Day – United by Unique campaign this February, we honour one final story, a powerful reminder that cancer does not look one way, feel one way, or follow one path.

Every journey is unique. Every person faces it differently.
And every story matters.

At just 25 years old, Katelin Chetty felt a large lump in her left breast. What followed was a whirlwind of appointments; ultrasounds, biopsies, scans, blood tests and restless nights. Then came the diagnosis: Triple Negative Breast Cancer, an aggressive form that demanded immediate treatment.

With no family history of cancer, the news was unexpected. But from the beginning, Katelin made a conscious decision: She would not live in fear.

At just 25, Katelin Chetty was diagnosed with aggressive triple-negative breast cancer. Her remarkable journey tells a story of strength, courage and resilience.

After consultation with her oncologist, Dr Poovan Govender at OncoCare in Durban, her treatment plan was confirmed. Despite the shock of diagnosis, Katelin wrote her LLB board exams the very next day,  and passed! It was the first of many moments that defined her mindset throughout treatment: focused, determined and unshaken.

Her chemotherapy plan was intense: weekly treatments for three months, followed by another three months of doxorubicin, known as the “Red Devil.” The physical toll was real: swelling, skin reactions, nail discolouration, overwhelming fatigue, loss of taste, and eventually, the loss of her hair, eyebrows and eyelashes.

But instead of shrinking, Katelin stepped forward with boldness.

Cancer took my hair, but it gave me clarity. It stripped everything back and showed me exactly how strong I already was.” – Katelin Chetty

Losing her hair did not weaken her confidence ,it strengthened it. It revealed who she truly was: resilient, fearless and unapologetically herself.

After chemotherapy, she underwent a mastectomy, a decision she faced without fear. Rather than viewing it as something taken from her, she embraced it as a life-saving choice and a powerful step toward healing.

After finishing chemo, I had a mastectomy, a decision that marked a turning point in my journey. It was a big step, but I faced it without fear. To my surprise, I experienced no pain from the moment of surgery through my recovery. I didn’t view it as something taken from me, but rather as a powerful, life-affirming choice. My body was changing, but instead of resisting, I embraced those changes with pride and strength.

Facing the final stage of treatment

The final stage was 25 rounds of radiotherapy at The Oncology Centre, Durban. Although each session lasted around 30 minutes, the emotional weight of showing up daily was significant. Yet it was here that Katelin found comfort and unexpected connection.

Even though each session would only last around 30 minutes, I was terrified. It felt strange to be so anxious about something so short but it wasn’t just about the time. It was the daily drive to the centre and the emotional weight of walking into yet another treatment room.

But from the very beginningthe radiation team from Icon Oncology made all the difference. The radiation team became more than clinicians. They became a steady source of warmth and encouragement. Even the most intimidating part of treatment, holding her breath through a mouthpiece to protect her heart, became manageable because she felt safe and supported.

Remarkably, Katelin experienced none of the severe side effects she had feared. She believes the positivity, care and consistency of her team made all the difference.

Today, she proudly says:

I am a triple negative breast cancer survivor.

Beautiful and brave, Katelin shares her inspiring story with us to help others who face triple-negative breast cancer.

She did not face her journey with fear, but with clarity, confidence and fierce determination. She credits her family, her partner, her chemo nurses, her oncologist and her radiation team for walking every step beside her.

Her message to others facing cancer is simple:

You are not defined by your diagnosis, your scars or your hair. You are defined by your strength and it is already inside you.

As we close this month of stories, Katelin reminds us why United by Unique matters. Every cancer journey is deeply personal. Yet we are united; by courage, by compassion and by the teams who deliver care with humanity.

From all of us at Icon Oncology, thank you to every patient who has shared their voice this February. Your stories shape understanding. Your resilience inspires hope.
