What is Icon?

What is Icon?

Icon is a network of oncologists, representing over 80% of all oncologists in South Africa’s private practice. Icon was established 10 years ago with the aim of ensuring and advocating for the highest standards of care for cancer patients. In addition to the network of oncologists, Icon is contracted to certain medical schemes. Dr David Eedes takes us through the benefits of using an Icon network oncologist.

Accredited oncologists

Oncologists part of the Icon network are accredited by Icon’s clinical team, and these oncologists work together to offer patients the best quality of care while also minimising cost to the patient. Icon has strict accreditation processes and all of its treatment units are accredited using international and local quality standards.

eAuth: Pre-authorisation software

One of the benefits of using an Icon network oncologist is access to the pre-authorisation software linked directly to medical aids and allows for immediate permissions and authorisations for prompt treatment. This means treatment can start promptly after authorisation.

Treatment Protocols

Icon has developed treatment protocols that take into account the patient needs and the best possible treatment outcome for each patient. Icon uses a value-based approach to deliver affordable cancer treatment options without compromising on quality. The treatment protocol model was developed to ensure the right treatment for the right patient and provided by the right specialist. The standardised protocols also reduce waste of resources with the aim of making sure that a patient’s medical aid oncology benefits are spent with the patients’ best interest.

Icon Formulary

In addition to the treatment protocols, which are approved by contracted medical schemes; Icon has a medicine formulary of locally registered cancer medicines that are paid by the medical scheme generally without co-payment. This further reduces the financial strain on the patients in their cancer journey.
